Applying sun cream may seem easy, but many people make simple mistakes. Here our skin care expert takes you through the steps to ensure that you are fully protected. - Shake the bottle well to mix up the product and all the UV filters.
- Apply liberally. The amount that you should apply is nearly always much more than you think you should. Apply about one finger sized amount to each part of the body. Two leading skin care experts, Steve Taylor and Brian Diffey, divide the body into 11 different areas, each of which needs one finger of sun cream:
 - If your sunscreen contains chemical UV filters you may need to apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun. This gives the ingredients time to attach to the skin. Mineral UV filters work straight away so not require this approach however it is good practice to apply sunscreen before you go out in the sun
- Cover all of your skin that's exposed to the sun. It is a good idea to apply it in a mirror so you can see where you have applied it. Don't be afraid to ask someone to help you apply your sunscreen to those hard to reach areas.
- It is also a good idea to reapply your sunscreen after you've been in the sun for 30 minutes. This makes it more likely that you'll get the places you might have missed.
- Definitely reapply the same amount of sunscreen every two hours, even if you haven't been sweating or in the water.
- Reapply sunscreen after exercising, swimming, towelling, and putting on or removing clothes.
